Are cosmetic dental treatments reversible? It depends on the procedure: whether it removes enamel, covers the tooth or moves teeth into new positions. The American Dental Association says veneer treatment is not reversible, because enamel is removed to place a veneer.
Before choosing a cosmetic treatment, it helps to understand what will happen to your natural teeth and what maintenance may be needed afterward.
This guide explains what whitening, bonding, veneers, crowns and clear aligners change, so you can have a more informed conversation with your dentist. If you’re considering treatment at Nuevo Dental in North Hollywood, this information can help you understand what to expect from each option.
What Does Cosmetic Dentistry Include?
Cosmetic dentistry covers treatments that change how your teeth look, including whitening, bonding, veneers, crowns and clear aligners. Veneers can improve teeth that are chipped, stained, crooked or misshapen, and can mask gaps. Crowns can cover discolored or badly shaped teeth and help protect a weak one.
It isn’t a recognized specialty, though. The National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards recognizes 12 dental specialties, and cosmetic dentistry isn’t one of them. Ask how often a dentist performs the procedure you’re considering and whether it involves changing your natural tooth structure. For a broader overview, see our guide to cosmetic dentistry.
Which Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments Are Not Reversible?
Veneers are one of the cosmetic treatments that cannot be reversed. With a porcelain veneer, the dentist removes a small amount of enamel from the front and sides of the tooth so the veneer can be placed. An impression or 3D model is then used to make the veneer, and you may wear a temporary veneer while it is being made. Since some enamel has been removed, the ADA says veneer treatment is not reversible.
A veneer covers the front of the tooth, while a crown covers the entire tooth. Veneers can also chip, crack, wear down or loosen, so they may eventually need to be repaired, re-bonded or replaced. If you’re considering porcelain veneers, ask how much enamel would need to be removed and what care the veneers may need over time. You can also read about how long cosmetic dental work lasts.
What Can Teeth Whitening Change, And What Can’t It?
Whitening products use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to break down stains and make teeth look lighter. How well whitening works depends on what caused the discoloration. Yellow teeth tend to respond better, while brown discoloration may be harder to remove and gray tones may not respond at all. Discoloration linked to certain medications or an injury to the tooth may also not improve with whitening.
Whitening won’t change the color of caps, veneers, crowns or fillings. If you have tooth-colored dental work and want to whiten your natural teeth, ask your dentist which treatment should come first.
CLIENT NOTE: Do you usually whiten before veneers or crowns so the shades match? What order do you follow?
Chairside bleaching usually takes one office visit. Custom trays from your dentist are worn at home and may take a few days to a few weeks to produce results. Whitening can also cause temporary tooth sensitivity. Using whitening products too often can damage enamel or irritate the gums, so follow the product directions and your dentist’s instructions.
How Do Composite Veneers Compare With Porcelain?
Composite veneers are made from tooth-colored filling material bonded to the tooth. The ADA says they may require less enamel removal and fewer visits than porcelain, and they’re easier to fix if damaged. They can also be less resistant to stains and wear than porcelain.
The amount of enamel removed matters if you’re concerned about whether treatment can be reversed. Find out whether your planned composite veneers require enamel removal and how that affects the tooth before treatment.
CLIENT NOTE: When does your office place bonding or composite veneers with no tooth preparation, and when is preparation needed?
Do Teeth Stay Straight After Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners move teeth into new positions, but they can shift back after treatment. Teeth can move toward their previous positions after braces or aligners, which is why retainers are used to maintain the results. The American Association of Orthodontists says retainers are needed to some degree for life. Your retainer type and wear schedule will depend on your treatment.
CLIENT NOTE: After aligner treatment, which retainer do patients get, is it included in the fee, and what wear schedule do you give?
Are Cosmetic Dental Treatments Reversible? A Side-By-Side Look
It depends on the treatment. Veneers involve enamel removal, which the ADA calls not reversible. Whitening, crowns and aligners each work differently.
| Treatment | What it changes | Know before you commit |
| Teeth whitening | Peroxide breaks stains into smaller pieces | Won’t change crowns, veneers or fillings; sensitivity is usually temporary |
| Composite veneers | Tooth-colored material bonded to the tooth | May need less enamel removed than porcelain; if enamel is removed, the treatment is not reversible |
| Porcelain veneers | Enamel is removed and a lab-made shell is bonded on | Not reversible; may need repair or replacement |
| Crowns | Covers the whole tooth | Can cover discolored or misshapen teeth and protect a weak one |
| Clear aligners | Moves teeth into new positions | Teeth can shift back without a retainer |
Questions To Ask Before You Commit
Before choosing a cosmetic treatment, these questions can help you understand what will happen to your teeth and what to expect afterward:
- How much of my tooth will be removed? If enamel needs to be removed, the treatment cannot be reversed.
- Do I need to treat decay or gum disease first? The ADA says placing veneers over unhealthy teeth may worsen existing problems.
- I clench, grind or have a deep overbite. Are veneers still a good option? The ADA notes that veneers may not be a good choice in these situations.
- Will insurance help cover the cost? Veneers are generally considered cosmetic, so they may not be covered unless they are medically necessary. Coverage depends on your plan. At Nuevo Dental, our financial policy explains how we handle insurance verification, estimates and claims.
- Is the dentist licensed? The ADA recommends seeing a licensed dentist for veneers. In California, you can use the Dental Board of California and the state’s DCA License Search to check a dentist’s license status and any disciplinary action listed.
If you’re considering cosmetic treatment at Nuevo Dental, you can use these questions to understand your options, what will change on your teeth and what to expect from treatment.
